Freddies Back hails from a family that John and James Walsh know well. The Wicklow-based father and son team produced his half-brother Junior Rattler to finish second in two point-to-points before he was sold to Oliver McKiernan, for whom he has already won three times over hurdles. Encouragingly, the Malinas-sired Freddies Back, has enjoyed success at a much earlier point in his career, as he made a winning debut at Inchydoney last Sunday. This is not the easiest course for a newcomer to tackle on their debuts, as it is one of the most unique point-to-point tracks here, with notable undulation changes and a significant test of jumping. These are tests that Freddies Back passed with flying colours which makes his success all the more notable. He always travelled strongly and was within his comfort zone throughout, as he recorded a two-length victory and was probably value for the winning margin. The horse he beat, had finished just four lengths behind one of Willie Mullins’ Champion Bumper runners on his debut, and it looks like there was definite substance to this performance.
